Pause the Timer While You Listen, on by default. The clock only runs while you type. It stops while a passage is read to you and whenever you use a shortcut to hear something, and starts again at your next keystroke - so you are scored on your typing, not on how long the passage took to read. Sentences, Paragraphs and Words. Two minutes without a keystroke finishes the test, with a warning at ninety seconds.
The next line stays in view at large text sizes. The current line used to sit dead centre, which at the bigger sizes left only the tops of the next line showing. It now sits just high enough for the whole next line to fit underneath. Smaller sizes look exactly as before.
Edge picks a Microsoft Natural voice automatically. Edge has no Google voices, and without this it could land on the old robotic system voice. Chrome still picks a Google voice; both are yours to change in Settings.

Fixes

Hyphens are gone from every passage. "well-stocked" was read aloud as one word with no hint that a dash had to be typed. Over a thousand passages now read "well stocked", "deep sea", "twenty six" and so on. Four passages that could not lose theirs gracefully were removed instead.
Bible verse references read as "to" - "Psalm 139:1 to 18" - while the typed character stays a dash.
The - key is spoken as "dash", not "hyphen".

Version 1.4.3

New in this version

Announce After a Mistake is now on from the start, set to spell out what is left of the word. After a slip, what you mainly need is the letters still to type; having the whole rest of the sentence read every time was a lot of speech to have to switch off. Both options are still in Settings if you want it the other way.

Fixes

Your results are now spoken in full. The end-of-test summary read out speed, accuracy and passages completed, but left characters typed, mistakes and time on the screen unread - so anyone relying on speech only ever heard half. All six are spoken now, and the time is read as a duration, "one minute", rather than as digits.
The Keyboard Shortcuts and Settings buttons on the Welcome screen are the same height again.

Version 1.4.2

New in this version

The first-visit speech question no longer tries to read itself aloud. Press Tab once and it reads the first button, "Turn on speech for everything", then Tab again for each of the others. The dialog opens while the page is still loading, which is exactly when browsers refuse to start speech, and waiting for it was less reliable than simply pressing a key. A screen reader still announces the whole dialog as normal.

Fixes

Speech no longer stops partway through a long announcement.

New in this version

The buttons on the first-visit speech question now say what they do - "Turn on speech for everything", "Turn on speech during tests only", "Turn off speech" - so they make sense on their own if you miss the spoken message.

Fixes

The first-visit speech question did not read itself aloud. Three separate causes: the app was cancelling its own announcement before it could start, the message was longer than the browser will speak in one go, and it could begin before your chosen voice had finished loading. If speech still cannot start - some browsers refuse until you have touched the page - it now replays on your first key press instead of being lost.
Long announcements were cut off after about fifteen seconds. They now run to the end.

Ctrl + backtick reads your live stats - time, speed, accuracy and progress. The clock stops while it reads, so checking never costs you time.
Press Ctrl on its own to stop speech, anywhere outside a running test.
Letter Phonetic Names, with separate checkboxes for Letters mode, wrong letters, and next-character prompts - so "C, charlie" can be on where it helps and off where it nags.
Sound Effects is now an accordion with checkboxes for Typing sounds, Error sounds and Test finished sound. The chime after each passage follows Typing sounds.

Next Sentence Announcement - announces a whole sentence at a time instead of a word at a time, for typists who find waiting on each word slows them down.
Announce After a Mistake - when you fix a mistake, says what to type again: the letters left in the word, the rest of the sentence, or both.
Read Punctuation - commas, quotation marks, colons and the rest are named as a passage is read, wherever they fall, so you know what to type. A sub-option extends this to screen readers.
Words and sentences typed now show as live stats in Sentences and Paragraphs modes.
Stats Position in Display: keep the stats beside the passage, or run them across the top to give the passage the full width.
The announcement switches are independent of one another and run Next Character, Next Word, Next Sentence. Word Spelling is a checkbox under Next Word, and no longer affects the Ctrl + Right Arrow shortcut.
Settings that depend on a switch disappear when it is off, rather than sitting there greyed out.
Finish Test moved off the play screen and into the pause menu, which now opens at the top.
Group pickers now lead with the question: "Choose an audience. Adults selected. Press up and down..."
"Log in to save your history" appears under the Sign Up button.
Checkboxes have a proper visible border matching the rest of the app.

Fixes

The keyboard shortcuts list could never actually be opened during a test. It was Shift + slash - which is the question mark, so it was read as a character you had typed. It is now Ctrl + slash.
Speech in Settings worked only sometimes. A stale internal flag was swallowing announcements at random.
The letter A was read as "eye" in spelling and phonetic announcements, instead of the letter's name.
"Choose a audience" is now "Choose an audience".
The passage scrolled out of view when you changed text size or font mid-test. It now stays on your current character.
The Kids level cards sat top-aligned when one wrapped to two lines.
Arrow-key navigation could freeze on a greyed-out option.
Shortcut keys now say "slash" and "backtick" aloud instead of skipping the punctuation silently.
Theme dropdowns no longer add "selected" after the name you picked.
Screen readers hear "Starting test" before the first passage, reliably.
Pressing Ctrl sometimes did not stop speech. It failed on chained announcements - a word then its spelling - because stopping the first part was triggering the second. Fixed properly.
Em dashes replaced throughout the passages, and eight passages with accented letters removed. Neither can be typed on a normal keyboard.
The tick in a checkbox was rendering as a dot. A doubled divider line under Sound Effects.

Version 1.3.0

New in this version

A first-visit question - "Use text to speech?" - with three answers: everywhere, during the test only, or no thanks.
Where Speech Is Used in Settings. "During the test only" keeps the app quiet on the setup, settings and results screens. Your own screen reader is unaffected either way.
Letters mode always announces the letter with its phonetic word, like "C, charlie".
Words mode always spells the word out, like "ore, O, R, E".
The on/off dropdowns in Settings became On/Off switches, and each now says which setting it belongs to when focused.
The start of a test says "Starting test" instead of reading out the whole audience, theme and length.

Fixes

The letter A was read as "uh" rather than its name, so spelling "cat" came out as "C, uh, T".
Word Spelling and Next Word Announcement used to vanish from Settings whenever Letters mode was selected.

A Welcome screen before your first test, covering pausing, speech, mistakes, and where to change things. It has a "Don't show this again" checkbox, and the test does not start until you press Done.

Fixes

Escape to pause was buried at the bottom of the Keyboard Shortcuts list; it is now at the top, and Right Arrow is listed separately from pressing it twice.
"Esc" is written out as "Escape" everywhere.
